Upward Bound/ConnCAP Program
SUMMER INSTRUCTORS
The Upward Bound/ConnCAP Program is looking for qualified instructors interested in improving educational opportunities for Connecticut high school students. The Upward Bound/ConnCAP Program works with high school students who are seeking a challenging and exciting academic program and who have the potential to continue their education beyond high school. An integral part of the program is the intensive six-week residential component, which provides academic instruction designed to give rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students the opportunity to experience a college environment while obtaining supplemental high school level academic preparation. Students attend daily classes in English (Literature and Composition), Mathematics (Geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry or Calculus) and Science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), which are held in the morning. Also, students attend afternoon classes in Foreign Languages (Spanish, French, and Italian), and additional electives such as drama, art, and social science courses.
Some of the teaching responsibilities include:
- Prepare and present materials for assigned subject area.
- For morning classes, teach three (50 min.) class sessions Monday through Friday. For afternoon classes teach Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, three class sessions (50 min.) each day.
- Keep attendance, monitor class behavior, complete students conduct reports as needed.
- Administer homework and in-class examinations.
- Work closely with an assigned class tutor.
- Provide mid-program and final student evaluations.
- Attend pre-program orientation and bi-weekly staff meetings, family picnic, and graduation ceremony.
- Additional responsibilities vary according to the class and time commitment.
Preference will be given to graduate students who have teaching and/or tutoring experience. Experience working with adolescents in a multi-cultural educational setting is a plus. A personal interview is required of all candidates. Interviews will be held during the months of March and April. The salary for morning teaching is $3,100.00 and $2,600.00 for afternoon teaching.

Resident Advisors
The University of Connecticut’s Student Support Services Program is looking for summer Resident Advisors: rising juniors, seniors and graduate students, particularly those who have had some experience working with multi-cultural students. The position will begin on June 22nd and run for seven weeks until August 8th. This is a residential program which will require your commitment to working and living in a residence hall with approximately 150 college bound students at the Storrs campus 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. A mandatory residential staff training will be held from June 22nd through June 27th .
A Resident Advisor's duties are varied, and require maturity, a genuine concern for students who participate in the program, strong interpersonal skills and an understanding of the goals of TRIO programs. The Resident Advisor’s job is challenging, demanding, often unpredictable and personally gratifying.
Individuals must have taken and passed a credited peer counseling course or possess equivalent experience. Applicants should be familiar with the University of Connecticut campus, residence halls (including rules, regulations and policies), faculty, professional staff, administration, and academic course offerings.
Deadline for submitting applications is March 7, 2008. A personal interview is required of qualified applicants. Interviews will be held during the months of March and April.

Upward Bound/ConnCAP Program
Residential Tutor/Counselor
The University of Connecticut's Upward Bound/ConnCAP Program is looking for summer Tutor/Counselors. Upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
Brief Description: The Tutor/Counselor position involves a seven week commitment (generally from the second week in June until the first week in August) to a residential program at UConn, Storrs. Tutor/Counselors work with high school students from Sunday afternoon until Friday afternoon. The Tutor/Counselor position is very intensive and involves being available 24 hours a day. The Tutor/Counselor also assists faculty members in small classes, provides tutoring in the evenings, helps lead recreational and cultural activities, supervises students in the resident halls, enforces the program rules and regulations, and acts as advisor and mentor to the students in the program. Tutor/Counselors must participate in a mandatory training prior to students arriving to campus.
Minimum Qualifications: Excellent interpersonal skills, good academic standing, and administrative and organizational skills are highly desirable for the position. Tutor/Counselors must have academic competence in at least one academic area: English, Math, Science, and Foreign Languages. Some experience working with teenagers, community organizations, and/or academic programs is highly desirable for this position. Tutor/Counselors are individuals that demonstrate maturity, good judgment, patience, and commitment to providing educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds.
A personal interview is required of all applicants. Interviews will be held during the months of March and April. Priority will be given to applications received by March 1st, 2008.
The position includes a salary of $2,100.00 plus room and board.
Note: Weekend stay in the dormitory is not allowable—except for Sunday evening.
